How the Korean consonant ㅎ changes its sound: A complete guide

The Korean consonant ㅎ is fascinating because its pronunciation isn't always stable. It changes depending on where it appears and what sounds surround it. If you've ever wondered why 좋다 sounds like [조타] or why 놓는 becomes [논는], this guide will explain everything.

1. Aspiration: Adding a breath of air

When ㅎ meets a plain consonant (ㄱ, ㄷ, ㅂ, ㅈ), it transfers its aspiration feature, making that consonant sound stronger and breathier.

👉 Examples:

좋다 ➡ [조타] ㄷ becomes aspirated ㅌ

놓고 ➡ [노코] ㄱ becomes aspirated ㅋ

Rule: ㄱ ➡ ㅋ, ㄷ ➡ ㅌ, ㅂ ➡ ㅍ, ㅈ ➡ ㅊ when influenced by ㅎ.

2. Disappearing act between vowels

In casual or fast speech, ㅎ often weakens or disappears when it sits between vowels.

👉 Example:

좋아 ➡ [조아] ㅎ drops completely

Why? Because ㅎ is weak fricative, and intervocalic positions make it easy to lose.

3. Before nasals: Total drop

When ㅎ comes before a nasal sound (ㄴ, ㅁ), it usually vanishes.

👉 Example:

놓는 ➡ [논는] ㅎ disappears before ㄴ

This happens because nasals require a closed oral cavity, which conflicts with the airy nature of ㅎ.

4. Tense consonants resist change

If ㅎ is followed by a tense consonant (ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅆ, ㅉ), it disappears without affecting the tense consonant.

👉 Example:

좋다 + 쓸다 ➡ [조쓸다]

5. At the beginning: Strong or weak

At the start of a word, ㅎ is pronounced as [h], but its strength depends on speech style:

  • Strong in careful speech
  • Weak or dropped in rapid speech

Why does this happen?

These changes reflect Korean's preference for ease of articulation and feature spreading. Since ㅎ is a weak consonant, it often disappears or passes its aspiration to nearby sounds.
